Group Design Project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
You are a member of a design team that will be providing architectural services for a potential client. The Jekyll Island State Park Authority has requested designs for rental cabins to be located in a new recreation area. These cabins must reflect the historical styles of buildings located on the island. Your team will design a 1 story cabin which applies the principles of good design and present your design to the evaluation team. ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What are the components of a house that give it a "historical" style?
SPECIFICATIONS:
Include the following elements in your design:
- 1 story
- Maximum width not to exceed 20’ (not including porches)
- Maximum length not to exceed 30’ (not including porches)
- The house shall contain the following rooms: Family room, dining area, kitchen, 2 bedrooms, one full bath, front entry, laundry area and a space for electrical service, HVAC and water heater.
- Doors and Windows are to be standard sizes. They must be hurricane rated.
- The first floor must be a minimum of 48" above finished grade to prevent damage due to possible flooding
- The house is to be placed on a foundation built on-site. Examples are wood piers, CMU piers, cast-in-place concrete walls.
TEAM ORGANIZATION
Your team must create a company name and letterhead. IT MUST BE PROFESSIONAL. All drawings submitted must be accompanied by a Letter of Transmittal. a sample will be provided to you.
You will customize your Title bars to include your company name and all partners names. One person must be the Project Manager. The Project Manager’s primary job is to organize and manage the work of others. He will be a part of the design team and will work as a team member.
The team must divide up the work in a manner that is fair. All team members must contribute to the project. The grades for the sketches and the floor plan will be equally shared by the entire group. For additional drawings, the creator will get full credit and other group members will get 25% of the score for their participation. The project manager will receive an additional grade for his/her administration of the project.

CAD Specifications:
Set up your CAD Template for the following items:
- Plot on “C” size sheet at ¼”=1’0” scale
- Detail sections and elevation must be at an appropriate scale for the drawing content.
- Follow the guidelines on page 944 for layers
- Follow the guidelines in chapter 6 for file names and other CADD standards.
- Use the Architectural Border that is located on the “U:\Students\Autocad\Architecture” drive
- Drawing package must contain a Title Sheet
PRESENTATION:
Your Team will make a 15 minute presentation to the client on Friday May 14th
You must have the following items:
- A complete set of clean drawings
- ¾”=1’0” scale balsa model 400 points
- Work Log & Calculations 100 points
- Professional digital presentation 200 points
The best overall design package & presentation as determined by the review board will be awarded a bonus.
GRADING CRITERIA
Factors to be considered in the evaluation of this assignment include:
- Quality of workmanship
- Teamwork and leadership
- Application of appropriate design techniques
- Any part of the project turned in late will have ten percent of the possible score deducted for each business day it is late.
- Any additional items submitted (3D model, 2 point perspective, etc) will add bonus points to the project
